Local Section: Oak Ridge/Knoxville
Date Submitted: May 2002
Topic: Outreach to Teachers & Students - Teacher Workshops
Description: Get your site to sponsor a teacher workshop.  Include tours of a nuclear-related location such as a nuclear power plant, nuclear medicine facility at a hospital, or other nuclear-related activity.  Consider offering and paying the costs for CEU credits for your workshop.

The Oak Ridge Section has done this for three years and has had attendance of around 50 teachers per year.  Feedback has been excellent.

Topic: Outreach to Teachers & Students - Dinner Meetings
Description: If your local section arranges dinner meetings with speakers, consider advertising the dinners with local school systems.  Target science teachers and offer to pay dinner costs for them and 5-10 of their students to get them to attend.  If you get them to your meeting ensure your section's membership talk to them and make them feel welcome.

The Oak Ridge Section has invited teachers and students to several dinner meetings.  We always pay their full meal costs.  We have found the meeting subject needs to be of general interest to get good attendance.  Meetings that the general public finds of interest have been well attended by invited teachers and students.
